Two little puppies in a tiny cage, huddled together in an attempt to protect themselves from the cold.  My name is Olivia Migliorisi and I am here today to talk to you about why you should not buy dogs from stores.

Stop buying dogs from stores.  There are so many reasons why you should not.  For example, who knows how they got there?  Many sources say that animals are put into small cages during transport.  Some cages even have multiple dogs.  The food and water provided is often dirty and old.  Dogs can die on the ride, however nobody is legally required to report it.  What does that mean?  It means that hundreds of dogs could die a year, and no one needs to know.

Buying from stores means that you are supporting this process.  When you give the pet stores money, they pay the puppy mills to give them more dogs.  So, when you are paying for a dog, you are paying the puppy mills.  You are paying for all of the hardships these dogs endure throughout their life- if they even have a long one.

if you buy a dog from a pet store, not only are you paying to support the traumatizeing of these dogs, but you are also torturing the mom dogs, too.  According to the humane society, mother dogs are forced to make babies continuously.  When she can no longer, most puppy mills either abandon or kill them.  They do not even try to find them a home.

I once fostered a puppy mill mother.  She came to us dirty and scared.  She barely even moved.  She was so skinny and she barely ate except for in the mornings, where she only ate a little bit.  At the puppy mill, she probably was given only a little bit of food and only in the morning.  We guessed that they almost never cleaned the cages either.

Did you know that there are about 10,000 puppy mills in the United States alone?  500,000 are kept just to have babies.  2.6 million of dogs purchased came from puppy mills.

Do you really want to support what is happening?  Do you really want to provide these awful places with money?  That money is what keeps the puppy mills alive.  What is continuing to torture these poor and innocent animals.  So, stop buying dogs from stores.  Remember: Adopt, don’t shop!
